Muslims: The First Casualties of Their Own Doctrine's Fury

On 12 May 1802—corresponding to 10 Muharram 1217 AH—Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad bin Saud unleashed Wahhabi hordes on Karbala, slaughtering thousands of Shia pilgrims and demolishing Imam Husayn's sacred tomb. This barbarity, detailed in Saiyad Khatab's Understanding Islamic Fundamentalism, exposes Islam's theological core: a supremacist creed that devours its own followers in endless fratricide.

Wahhabi Onslaught: Bloodbath at Husayn's Shrine

Wahhabism, Islam's purest revival, brands shrine veneration as shirk (polytheism). Abd al-Aziz, second emir of Diriyah, dispatched 12,000 Najdi warriors to purge Karbala. Eyewitnesses recount eight hours of carnage: 2,000-5,000 defenders butchered, including women, children, and elders. Pregnant women disemboweled, bodies piled high. The golden-domed mausoleum of Husayn—grandson of Muhammad, martyred at Karbala in 680 CE—was razed, its treasures (gold, carpets, pearls, guns from centuries of donations) loaded onto 4,000 camels.

Khatab analyzes this as fundamentalist zeal: Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's fatwas decreed death to "grave-worshippers." Shia rituals like Muharram processions, commemorating Husayn's thirst-ridden slaughter by Yazid's Sunni forces, fueled the grudge. Wahhabis timed the raid on Ashura (10 Muharram), sacred to Shia, mocking their grief with steel. Ottoman chronicler Ibn Bishr boasted: "We took Karbala... and slaughtered its people."ballandalus. 

This wasn't mere plunder; it was doctrinal purification. Husayn's tomb symbolized Shia "deviance" from tawhid—Wahhabis shattered domes across Najd, enforcing Muhammad's hadith: "Do not make my grave a festival." Karbala's sack echoed 1801 Ta'if massacre (500 slain), presaging global jihad.

 Islam's Internal Jihad: Sects Devouring Devotees

Islam claims unity (ummah), yet Quran 49:9 mandates: "If two parties of believers fight, make peace; if one aggresses, fight the aggressor till it submits to Allah." History obeys: post-Muhammad, Ridda Wars crushed apostate tribes; First Fitna pitted Ali vs. Muawiya, birthing Shia-Sunni schism at Karbala, where Husayn's 72 fell to 30,000 Umayyads. 

Abbasids massacred Alids; Fatimids persecuted Sunnis; Seljuks purged Ismailis. Mongols, converted under Ghazan, razed Baghdad (1258). Ottoman-Safavid wars spilled Shia blood for centuries. Wahhabism amplified this: Ibn Saud's pact with Muhammad bin Saud fused puritan theology with Arabian conquest, sacking Shia shrines from Basra to Damascus. 

Khatab traces fundamentalism's thread: from medieval Hanbalis to Qutb's milestones, dissenters are munafiqun (hypocrites) worthy of death. Pakistan's 1974 Ahmadi ban, Iran's 1980s mujahedeen purges, ISIS's 2014 Mosul Shia graves desecration—same Wahhabi logic. Muslims kill 80% of global terror victims; 2023: 7,000+ intra-Muslim jihad deaths.

Modern Echoes: Apostates, Blasphemers, Reformers Slain

Islam's hudud devours insiders first. Apostasy (riddah) merits beheading (Bukhari 9.84.57); Saudi executes "deviants," Pakistan lynches Ahmadis. Iran's morality police crushed Mahsa Amini (2022), sparking hijab revolts—1,500+ protesters slain, mostly Muslim women defying veiling (Quran 24:31). 

Blasphemy enforces takfir: Asia Bibi's acquittal (2019) ignited TLP riots; Mashal Khan beaten to death (2017) for "liberalism." Taliban stones women in stadiums, mirroring Husayn's executioners. Hamas executes Gazan "collaborators"; Houthis crucify Zaydis. Sufis, "grave-idolaters," face Al-Shabaab beheadings in Somalia, Boko Haram mosque bombings in Nigeria. 

Even Sunnis fracture: Deobandi vs. Barelvi in India (Jamiat clashes); Salafi-jihadis vs. Ikhwan in Egypt (Rabaa massacre, 1,000 dead). Quran's abrogation (naskh) justifies violence escalation—peaceful Meccan verses yield to Medinan sword verses (9:5, 9:29). 

Hindu Lens: Lessons from Subcontinental Slaughter

India witnessed Islam's self-cannibalism aiding conquest. Aurangzeb executed Shia guru Teg Bahadur (1675), beheaded Sikhs; Tipu Sultan forcibly converted Kodavas, massacred Mangalores. Partition (1947): Muslim League mobs slew 1 million, mostly Muslims fighting Bengali Muslims. Kashmir: 1990 Shia killings by Lashkar; 2023 Pahalgam pilgrims targeted. 

Pakistan exemplifies: 1971 Bangladesh genocide (3 million Bengalis, mostly Muslim, by Punjabi army); Zia’s Hudood raped Aisha Ibrahim (1980s). Baloch, Pashtuns bombed as "infidels." Today's Taliban hosts TTP, killing 80,000+ Pakistanis since 2001.
