On 11 May 1951, President Dr. Rajendra Prasad consecrated the rebuilt Somnath Temple, igniting a national vow to restore India's desecrated holy sites. This day, now etched as Mandir Punarnirman Sankalp Diwas, symbolizes unyielding Hindu resolve against centuries of temple destruction by foreign invaders. It heralds the dawn of civilizational revival, honoring ancestors who defended dharma against barbaric onslaughts.

Somnath's Eternal Saga of Defiance

Somnath Jyotirlinga, perched on Gujarat's Arabian Sea coast, stood as Shiva's foremost shrine since antiquity. Scriptures hail it as "eternal," drawing pilgrims across ages. Yet, Islamic marauders struck repeatedly: Mahmud of Ghazni's 1026 CE raid looted 20 million dinars, smashing the lingam and slaughtering 50,000 defenders. Allauddin Khilji (1299), Zafar Khan (1395), Aurangzeb (1665, 1706)—each reduced it to rubble, carting idols to Mecca for humiliation.

Hindu kings rebuilt defiantly: Ahilyabai Holkar in 1783 installed a new lingam amid ruins. British chronicler James Forbes noted locals' undimmed faith. Partition's chaos saw Junagadh's Muslim Nawab flee, leaving Somnath a poignant wreck—its dome shattered, sanctum violated. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on 13 November 1947 Diwali visit, vowed reconstruction, declaring: "Somnath must rise again for India's soul."

Patel's Iron Will vs. Nehruvian Weakness

Patel's Somnath Trust mobilized public donations—Rs 24.92 lakh from devotees, no government funds per Nehru secular caveat. Architect Prabhashankar Sompura revived Chalukya style using Prabhas Patan stone. Despite Nehru's dismay—"state must stay aloof from religion"—construction surged. Nehru privately fretted to Prasad: "Opening risks communalism," but the President, a devout Sanatani, affirmed: "Somnath has been sacred since time immemorial, revived after every destruction."

On 11 May 1951, amid Vedic chants, Prasad installed the 10-tonne lingam, proclaiming: "This temple's resilience mirrors India's." Over 1,000 dignitaries witnessed, marking secularism's limits—dharma demands reclaiming stolen heritage. Critics decried it "Hindu revivalism," but it fueled national pride, echoing Patel's unification of 562 princely states.

Documented Barbarity: A Trail of 80,000 Temples

Somnath exemplifies Islamic iconoclasm across Bharat. Historian Sita Ram Goel's "Hindu Temples: What Happened to Them" lists 1,800+ mosques atop temples; Richard Eaton tallies thousands. Quran 9:5 ("slay idolaters"), Hadith (Sahih Muslim 1767: destroy images) mandated it. Delhi's Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque overlays 27 Jain temples; Vidisha's Bijamandal Masjid buries Bhojshala Saraswati shrine; Mathura's Shahi Idgah engulfs Krishna Janmabhoomi.

Sufi "saints" aided: Ghazni's loot blessed by Ismail Haji; Aurangzeb's firman razed Kashi Vishwanath, idol sunk in Ganga. Babri Masjid (1528) desecrated Ram Janmabhoomi, confirmed by ASI excavations—pillar bases, terracotta under dome. Gyanvapi (1669) survey reveals Hindu remnants beneath mosque. Qutb Minar repurposes 27 temple idols.

Partition gifted Pakistan 35% land despite 24% Muslims, yet 1947 riots razed more temples. Kashmir's 1990 exodus saw 500+ shrines torched. Bangladesh's Hindus plummet from 22% to 8%, amid lynchings and grabs.

Sankalp Diwas: Vow for Full Liberation

Mandir Punarnirman Sankalp Diwas rallies Hindus to fulfill Patel-Prasad's legacy. Ram Mandir's 2024 pran pratishtha realized millennia-long wait, unmasking Babri's illegitimacy. Kashi, Mathura next—Supreme Court nods Gyanvapi survey; time for justice. PM Modi's triad (Kashi Vishwanath corridor, Kedarnath, Mahakaleshwar) proves resolve; Somnath's 2026 Swabhiman Parv marks 1,000 years since Ghazni.

Nehruvian "secularism" betrayed: Waqf Act 1995 grabs land unchecked; Places of Worship Act 1991 freezes conquests. True patriotism dismantles this—temples aren't "disputed," but reclaimed patrimony. Hindu unity thwarted fatwas, fat-shaming; now accelerate: fund trusts, litigate ASI digs, shun appeasers.

Global Echoes and Dharma's Triumph

Worldover, faiths rebuild: Jerusalem's Temple Mount contested; Europe's cathedrals restored. Hindus, long apologetic, now assert: Sanatan endured 1,200 years of jihad. Somnath's lingam, retrieved from sea lore, symbolizes resurgence. On Sankalp Diwas, pledge: no more shames like Sabrimala imbroglio or church-conversions. Fortify borders, teach history unwhitewashed—Ghazni no "raider," but fanatic.

Dr. Prasad's words endure: "May Somnath's glory persist." From Somnath to Kashi, Bharat awakens. Dharma's victory isn't vengeance, but restoration—unbroken chain from Puranas to Prithviraj. Celebrate 11 May: light jyoti, vow punarnirman. Akhand Bharat's temples shall shine, invaders' mosques memorials to folly.
